Borax Substitute (sodium sesquicarbonate) is an eco-friendly mineral compound widely used for home cleaning, laundry, and deodorising. It has a similar alkaline pH to traditional borax but is safer for household use, sitting perfectly between mild baking soda and strong soda crystals in strength.
Chemical Profile & Substitution
- Active Ingredient: Sodium sesquicarbonate (Na₃H(CO₃)₂).
- pH Level: Alkaline (roughly 9.5 to 10), matching traditional borax.
- Substitution Ratio: 1:1 replacement for original borax recipes.
| Application Area | Specific Use | Method / Recipe |
| Laundry Care | Detergent Booster | Add 2 tablespoons directly to the machine drawer to soften hard water, prevent limescale, and brighten whites. |
| Pre-Wash Stain Soak | Dissolve roughly 200g in a bucket of hot water. Soak heavily soiled clothes before running a normal wash cycle. | |
| Surface Cleaning | Scouring Paste | Mix equal parts Borax Substitute, bicarbonate of soda, and salt. Add water to form a paste to clean sinks and taps |
| Spray Cleaner | Dissolve 2 tablespoons into 1 litre of hot water. Pour into a spray bottle to clean countertops, tiles, and bathroom fixtures. | |
| Deodorising | Carpet Freshener | Fill a jar 3/4 full, add 10 drops of essential oil, shake well. Sprinkle over carpets, wait 15 minutes, and vacuum. |
| Bin & Drain Freshener | Dissolve a large handful in warm water and pour down drains or wash out dustbins to neutralize foul odours. | |
| Appliances | Toilet Deep Clean | Pour 300g down and around the toilet bowl sides. Leave overnight to dissolve limescale and flush in the morning. |
| Dishwasher Refresh | Sprinkle a small handful into the bottom of an empty dishwasher and run a hot cycle to eliminate grease and build-up. | |
| Crafts/Hobbies | Flower Drying | Use as a desiccant. Submerge fresh flowers in the dry crystals to absorb moisture while keeping their shape. |
⚠️ Critical Restrictions and Exclusions
- No Pest Control: Unlike original borax, Borax Substitute cannot be used as an insecticide or for pest control applications. It does not effectively eradicate ants or insects.
- No Slime Making: This substitute lacks the specific borate ions needed to cross-link polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) glue. It will not work to create homemade toy slime.
- Surface Warnings: Do not use this product on aluminium surfaces or delicate varnishes, as the alkalinity can pit, discolour, or strip the finish.
- Not Consumable: It is strictly not for culinary, food, or medicinal use. Always keep the powder out of reach of children and household pets.
